Threats against Babacar Fall: SYNPICS calls for protective measures
SYNPICS has condemned the death threats reported by RFM journalist Babacar Fall following a programme featuring Abdou Sy. The union is calling on the authorities to ensure his safety and identify those responsible.
The Union of Information and Communication Professionals of Senegal (SYNPICS) has condemned death threats targeting RFM journalist Babacar Fall. The organisation is calling for measures to protect him, as well as investigations to establish the source of the threats and prosecute those responsible.
According to a statement from its Executive Bureau, the situation arose after the 27 August 2026 edition of the “RFM Matin” programme, during which Babacar Fall hosted Abdou Sy. Introduced as the brother of Serigne Moustapha Sy, the moral leader of Dahiratoul Moustarchidina Wal Moustarchidaty (DMWM), the guest made remarks that sparked controversy.
A complaint announced by the religious organisation
DMWM challenged certain statements made during the interview and announced its intention to file a defamation complaint. The day after the broadcast, Babacar Fall publicly reported that he was being subjected to insults and death threats.
SYNPICS considers these acts an infringement of freedoms. The union stresses that journalists must not face threats, pressure or intimidation in the course of their work.
An appeal to the authorities
The organisation emphasises the importance of press freedom, which it says is guaranteed by the Constitution and is essential to the rule of law and democracy. It calls on all stakeholders to respect freedom of expression and the right to information.
Beyond the protection sought for Babacar Fall, SYNPICS expresses its solidarity with the journalist and media professionals. The union also says it will remain vigilant against any intimidation or attack directed at information professionals.
