Tunisia: Heatwave and Water Shortages Fuel Social Discontent

The prolonged heatwave in Tunisia continues to affect access to water. Queues remain outside shops to buy bottled water, amid persistent cuts in some regions and a shortage of mineral water, RFI reports.

In response to these difficulties, the army and national guard have been deployed since 28 August to distribute drinking water by tanker. The measure comes as supply problems remain unresolved in all affected areas.
Social anger fuelled by uncertainty
The situation is contributing to growing social discontent, according to RFI. The lack of any announced timeline for a return to normal is fuelling these tensions, as the heatwave continues and access to water remains difficult for part of the population.
